Transitioning to Organic
As you know, things have dramatically changed in the food industry since our great grandparents grew their own food, and the increased use of pesticides and fungicides in our food supplies has had a significant detrimental effect—not only to the taste of our crops, but also on it’s safety for our families, our water supply and our planet. If you are not accustomed to eating organic food, the prospect of switching over from conventional can be quite daunting. But making the switch doesn’t have to upend your family’s eating habits, nor strain your wallet.
“Organic” represents products grown under the standards for the Organic Food Production Act and they are strictly regulated to ensure a chemical-free product. Organic food handlers, like Good Harvest Market, are committed to maintaining the integrity of this label. Certain fruits and vegetables tend to absorb more of the detrimental pesticides and herbicides that are sprayed on conventional crops, and many of these chemicals cannot be washed off. This is of particular concern for our growing children.
Certain foods absorb more of these harmful chemicals than others, and some like milk and beef are loaded with antibiotics and growth hormones. So as you consider making a change, you might start out with these important foods to eat organic:
- Baby food
- Dairy Produces
- Meat & Poultry
- Corn & Corn Products
- Soy & Soy Products
- Foods listed on the Environmental Working Group's "Dirty Dozen" produce list
Not only is organic healthier, but we think you’ll find that the taste is far superior. Just try an organic strawberry or pineapple!
